Best Beaches in Gdansk: Brzezno vs Jelitkowo vs Stogi vs Sobieszewo

Gdansk has more coastline than most first-time visitors expect, and the four main beaches could not be more different from each other. One is a five-minute walk from an apartment with a promenade full of cafes; another feels like a nature reserve with almost nobody on it. Which one is “best” depends entirely on what you actually want from a beach day.

Brzezno — the easy, obvious choice

Brzezno is the beach most Mint guests end up at, mostly because it is so easy to reach and so well set up for a few hours by the water. There is a proper pier to walk out on, a promenade lined with cafes and restaurants (some seasonal, some open year-round), and a wide sandy beach that slopes gently into the water — genuinely good for families with small children who are not confident swimmers yet.

The trade-off is that it is also the busiest beach in the city on a warm summer weekend. Arrive before mid-morning if you want space to spread out a towel without negotiating with your neighbours. Outside the peak of July and August, Brzezno is comfortably paced even at midday.

Jelitkowo — Brzezno’s quieter, greener neighbour

Jelitkowo picks up where Brzezno ends, running north toward Sopot along the same stretch of coast. The beach itself is similarly wide and gently sloping, but the crowd thins noticeably once you walk a few minutes away from the main tram stop and entrance. Its other advantage is what sits directly behind it: the edge of Oliwa Forest, which makes it easy to combine a beach morning with a shaded walk if the sun gets too intense, or to bring a picnic and treat the whole afternoon as a mix of beach and woodland.

Jelitkowo also works well as a stepping stone if you are planning to walk or cycle the coastal path north toward Sopot rather than taking the tram the whole way.

Stogi — space, dunes, and fewer people

Stogi sits on the opposite side of the city from Brzezno and Jelitkowo, closer to the port and to Sobieszewo Island, and it feels different the moment you arrive. The beach is broader, backed by pine-dotted dunes rather than a built-up promenade, and amenities are sparser — which is exactly why some guests prefer it. If a beach with cafes on every corner feels more like a resort than a coastline to you, Stogi is the antidote.

It is also one of the more relaxed spots in the city for a long walk with a dog, given how much open beach there is away from the busiest bathing sections. Sobieszewo Island — the beach that feels like a day trip

Sobieszewo is technically still within Gdansk’s city limits, but it does not feel like it. The island sits at the mouth of the Vistula river, partly protected as a nature reserve, and the beach here is the quietest and least developed of the four by a clear margin. Expect dunes, reed beds, birdlife, and long stretches where you genuinely will not see another person, even in summer.

The trade-off is travel time — this is not a spontaneous half-hour outing. Budget the better part of an afternoon, or make it a half-day trip with a proper lunch stop on the island itself. For anyone staying more than a couple of nights and wanting one beach day that feels completely different from the rest of the trip, Sobieszewo is worth the extra effort.

• First visit, short stay, want it simple → Brzezno. Easiest access, most amenities, hardest to get wrong.

Facilities and practicalities

Brzezno and Jelitkowo are the most developed of the four, with lifeguard cover during the official bathing season, changing facilities, toilets, and food and drink within a short walk of the sand. Stogi has fewer amenities the further you walk from the main entrance, and Sobieszewo Island has the least infrastructure of all — pack accordingly if you are heading there, since you cannot count on finding a cafe every few hundred metres the way you can at Brzezno.

Lifeguard cover, where it exists, generally runs through the core summer bathing season rather than year-round, so check current flags and signage on the day if you are swimming outside the busiest months. Sunbeds and parasols for hire are common at Brzezno and Jelitkowo in season; bring your own at Stogi and Sobieszewo.

A note on the water itself

Worth being honest about this up front: the Baltic near Gdansk is not the Mediterranean. The sea is at its most swimmable from around mid-June to early September, and even then it reads as refreshing rather than warm-bath comfortable. Locals are in the water from the first genuinely warm days of the season through to the first cold snap of autumn; visitors used to southern European beaches are sometimes caught off guard by how brisk it feels, especially early in the morning or after a windy day. It is part of the charm rather than a flaw — a proper sea swim rather than a heated pool with sand around it.

Which apartment puts you closest to the water

If beach access is the priority for your stay, Seaside Letnica is the obvious base — a few minutes on foot from Brzezno, with Jelitkowo an easy tram ride further along the coast. Guests staying in Bastion Walowa or DOKI can still reach any of these beaches within 20-30 minutes by tram, which works well if the beach is one part of a trip rather than the whole point of it.
