Parking near the Old Town in Gdansk — where to park in the Main Town

Mint Apartments · · 8 min read

Parking near the Old Town in Gdansk: the driving ban on Długi Targ, the paid parking zone, multi-storey car parks, and a space at your accommodation instead of daily charges.

Frequently asked questions

Can you drive a car onto Długi Targ in Gdańsk?
No. Długi Targ and Długa Street are a Restricted Access Zone marked with the C-16 sign, closed to ordinary car traffic. Only emergency vehicles and cars with an R-type permit, issued to services and suppliers for a specific date, are allowed in — the resident permit (IGM) alone isn't enough to get past this sign. Parking in the zone without the required permit carries a fine of 100 zł and 1 penalty point, and the city guard regularly patrols this area, so leave your car in a car park outside the zone and cover the last stretch to Długi Targ on foot.
Do you have to pay in the city-centre Paid Parking Zone on Sundays and public holidays too?
Yes — this is the most important difference compared with many Polish cities. The Main Town, the Old Town and Długie Ogrody all fall within the Paid Parking Zone (SPP), where the charge applies every day, including Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, roughly from 9:00 to 20:00. You pay at a ticket machine or via an app — the rules and rates do get updated, so always check the current signage on the spot.
What's the better deal for a multi-day stay: the ticket machine, a multi-storey car park, or a space at your accommodation?
For a stay longer than one day, a space included in the price of your accommodation wins almost every time. The SPP charge resets every day and climbs with every additional hour, and a multi-storey car park also charges separately for each day. A space assigned to your apartment you pay for once, as part of the stay, and you don't have to watch the clock or move the car every day.
Where can you park a campervan, a van, or a car with a trailer close to the Old Town?
Not really in the centre itself — the narrow, medieval streets of the Main Town and the Old Town aren't built for large vehicles, and most underground car parks have height limits (the Museum of the Second World War garage, for example, allows a maximum of 1.9 metres). Coaches have separate designated car parks in Śródmieście, supplemented seasonally for larger events. If you're travelling in a large vehicle and staying with us, send us the dimensions before booking — we'll point you to a parking space that fits, or the nearest surface car park.
